Improved Climate Inputs for Pavement Design in New Jersey

Environmental conditions have significant effects on performance of both flexible and rigid pavements. In the current AASHTO Pavement ME, an Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model (EICM) uses climatic data to simulate internal pavement temperature, moisture, and freeze-thaw conditions as a function of time. EICM requires historical records of five weather-related parameters reported on an hourly basis: air temperature, precipitation, wind speed, percentage sunshine, and relative humidity. Recently, Modern Era Retrospective-Analysis for Research and Application (MERRA) was developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which provides meteorological data in a uniformly gridded dataset. Therefore, it is desired to know if the current climate data inputs in Pavement ME can be enhanced by adding more stations locally available or using the new MERRA data in order to improve prediction accuracy of Pavement ME.
