Effectiveness of LPIs in Reducing Pedestrian Crashes at Signalized Intersections on State Highways

Lead Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs) are utilized at signalized intersections to allow pedestrians a three to seven second head-start to enter the crosswalk before turning traffic may proceed. This allows pedestrians to better establish their presence in the intersection, improving their visibility and safety. A study exploring the potential effectiveness of LPIs on New Jersey state highways, and the considerations that ...more »

Build a monorail over Rt 1

To reduce congestion, we can build a monorail over Rt 1 and other highly congested highways. This can be done within the existing right of way, possibly over the median. The end points need to connect to common destinations such as commuter parking lots, malls, airports, train stations, etc. It Is a big undertaking, but it can get cars off the road. And, of course it has to be terrorist-proof. The monorail can host ...more »

Railroad Trespasser Sensors

Recent train wrecks and people getting killed by trains have been in the news, becoming a major headache for America's railways. The wrecks and rollovers might be mitigated if a way were found to make the railroad tracks "feel" the trespassers or blocking objects. The idea would work like this: 1) Person or object is stuck on the tracks or trespassing. 2) Sensors/ detectors lining the tracks, or cameras, detect the person ...more »

Integrating Real-Time Traffic Data with NJDOT Signal PerformanceMeasurement System

The NJDOT is currently piloting the FHWA ATSPM (Advanced Traffic Signal Performance Measure) system with modifications made to take in the existing NJDOT InSync and SCATS controller data. The modifications addressed the limitations of the FHWA version of ATSPM system of only accepting data from high-resolution traffic signal controllers. However, there are still a significant number of existing NJDOT low-resolution signals ...more »

NJ needs more 10 hour Truck parking

There is a law that truck drivers may not drive more than 14 hours in a 24 hour period, causing a 10 hour parking need. When drivers are tired they may be dangerous drivers, so 10 hour parking is needed for long distance truck drivers. Recent articles lamented the lack of enough 10 hour parking spaces, so truck drivers lose time (sometimes hours) looking for parking and sometimes end up on unsuitable roads while trying ...more »

STOP: Are disability roadway warning signs effective and safe for continued usage in New Jersey?

American Community Survey data (2015) shows that over ten percent of New Jersey's population has one or more disabilities, with increased prevalence rates for certain disabilities in recent years. For example, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate that New Jersey has the highest rate of Autism Spectrum Disorder of any state in the nation, with one in every 41 NJ children affected with ASD. Quantitative landslide hazard assessment in New Jersey: an integrated field and laboratory approach

Landslides in New Jersey occur in geologically weak regions with moderate to steep slopes, which has been a big concern for transportation safety. Typical landslides mapped by New Jersey Geological Survey include rock falls and rockslides. Rock falls, very common in roadway cuts and steep cliffs, refer to the abrupt movement of rock and boulders detached from slopes or cliffs. Rockslides indicate the movement of rock ...more »

Pedestrian Walkway over Lalor St and 129.

The pedestrians in the Lalor Street area need a safer route across the 129 highway. Researching methods for lowering driver stress at Rest Areas

Research has shown that exposure to nature has emotional and physical benefits. Exposure of as little as ten to fifteen minutes can help to lower blood pressure, elevate mood, lower cortisol levels, and have other physiological benefits. These benefits only increase with the prolonged exposure to not only large natural areas but even smaller simplistic natural settings and even technological simulations. Each rest stop, ...more »

In places where there is a large number of pedestrians crossing streets and navigating intersections, the amount of time given to pedestrian crossing time on traffic signals exacerbates an already overcrowded transportation system.
