Rollers on guide rails

We know how important it is to have a guide rail on turnings. When big trucks or cars lose their control and hit the guide rail its important to have a strong guide rail even on the bridge if the guide rails and not strong enough it may cause a big accident and vehicle can roll over from the road. so instead of focusing on guide rail, I found if we can put rollers on guide rail colors it will divert the impact force into... more »

As a state worker, I know the importance and cost of the guide rail and when we are talking about safety it's very much important to have guide rails on turns and bridges.

So by using this idea (Rollers in the guide rail's columns) we can decrease the number of ACCIDENTS near guide rails. and save drivers' lives and reduce the amount of injury too. Also, this idea will not cost you more in a modification in guide rails. So it's easy to install and very helpful.

I can share the draft design too for this idea.

Using road salt and street sweeping to reduce pollution

It seems that there are considerable air quality problems on our roads. The majority of our PM2.5 on roadways comes from wear on tires, brakes, and clutches, and these contain metals that have the ability to harm our lungs' immune response--particularly worrisome with the COVID-19 pandemic (Selley et al., 2020). Once airborne, these metal particles seem to be made more toxic as they are solubilized by acidic atmospheric... more »

This is a priority, because areas where there are high concentrations of roads (e.g., cities) tend to have worse air quality. Although combustion emissions are a component of that, wear products from brakes, tires, and clutches are significant pollutants, as well. Using road salting and street sweeping, which are existing operations, there is an opportunity to address a significant component of air pollution due to roadways.

WORK ZONE SPEED BUMPS

Due to work zone safety being compromised by speeding drivers, I would like to see a temporary Speed Bump that is able to be laid in the roadway to further alert drivers that they are approaching a work zone. It would be ideal to have reflective text to be seen at night and during daytime with hash lines for visibility. A spring loaded flag on either end would be good.

Development of Low-Embodied Carbon Concrete Mixtures for NJDOT

The State of New Jersey has independently joined the Paris Climate Accords and uphold the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. Per this agreement, an overall carbon reduction of 14% needs to be achieved within the United States. Concrete is responsible for around 8% of the world's CO2 production, mainly due to the production of portland cement. Therefore, finding methods to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete can... more »

Meeting carbon reduction targets is a broad goal set by the State of NJ, in which all agencies are expected to participate. This work will support NJDOT in choosing sustainable, lower-embodied carbon concrete solutions that do not sacrifice concrete quality or cost. The benefit of this work will be realized in better concrete durability, lower life-cycle cost, and more sustainable concrete materials that can be used in a wide variety of projects across the state. It is anticipated that the final guidance documents and suggested changes to NJDOT specifications will result in more resilient transportation infrastructure that is being built to maximize performance while minimizing environmental impacts. Implementation of this work will make NJDOT a leader in sustainable concrete construction practices, supporting statewide and regional goals for carbon reduction.

Extend Service Life of Concrete Bridge Decks with Internal Curing trending idea

Curing is a critical step in concrete pavement construction. Due to the large surface area to be covered, external curing methods normally do not provide concrete with necessary moisture conditions for long-term hydration. Insufficient curing often causes internal cracks or shrinkage cracks on the surface of the pavement. These early-age cracks not only hurt the strength, but also increase the permeability so that chlorides... more »

Why is this a priority and what are the benefits for the State/County/City?

Internal curing can minimize concrete cracking at very early age. Early age cracking, most are due to shrinkage caused by lacking of curing, will hurt the long-term performance and the durability of concrete. It may cause severe corrosion of rebars, as chlorides and other aggresive ions from deicing chemicals can easily penetrate deep into the concrete layer. Internal curing can also lead to a denser structure of concrete, so that the material is better performed when freeze-thaw cycles happen.

Considering the geographic location of New Jersey and the dense polulation, the pavement maintenance cost is huge each year. Therefore, improve the quality of pavement can not only save efforts and costs of repairing, but also making it a safer place to commute for NJ residents.

Reverse transportation planning model by applying machine learning technic

Transportation models are used for predicting future traffic, especially in urban areas. Their traffic forecasts are applied to plan new infrastructures such as highways, bridges, new transit lines, and/or enhancing current public transportation modes. They use the specific areas' socio-economic data together with sample travel survey data to build a transportation model. The initially developed model usually is calibrated... more »

Surveying and collecting socio-economic data is time-consuming and costly for transportation planning. Combining available real-time traffic data such as navigation data with historical socio-economic data to predict future community status would be a huge saving on data collection and prediction cost and time. This implemented model can help the NJDOT, and local transportation planners swiftly track their changes to better plan the transportation infrastructures.

In today's world, where computers have an unprecedented involvement in our society's evolution, we should prepare to use that to its fullest extent possible without delegating matters to a private company who may or may not be in business when a problem arises. Design-Build for Process Condensation and Savings

It was suggested several years ago, in response to a Commissioner's question, that the only way to eliminate the massive amount of overhead and the massive time and money to be spent on projects is to move the DOT into a design-build company. At the time, it was said that it could not be done without legislation; and legislation would not be coming. Now, however, that legislation is moving forward.

I propose that the... more »

In times where lockdowns can dramatically affect the flow of revenue, thereby stalling or eliminating important projects, becoming the most efficient company is of the utmost importance. Doing so will allow DOT to make better use of current staffing levels and bring back some important QC functions that have gone by the wayside due to funding and staffing issues.

Tack Coat Effectiveness Study.

In the last twenty years, I have personally driven over five hundred thousand miles. In that time I have seen many new pavement projects constructed in many different areas. Some examples are the following. Within two to three years after construction,... more »

The failure of pavements prior to their design life expectancy is a major cause of the increase in annual budgets. It adds more projects to the list of needed construction, helping to dilute the funds available in each budget cycle. Increasing the life expectancy of our roads will allow for those funds to be directed to many places that are in need, but suffer from lack of funding.

Corrosion Study

With most of the State's infrastructure in need of maintenance and repair, a main cause particularly on steel structures is corrosion. Corrosion which acts in several different forms results in section loss, which reduces capacity of the affected member. Why is this a priority and what are the benefits for the State/County/City?

This is a priority as many bridges within the state are near the end of their service life currently. This study if implemented now can gather critical information to better understand effects of corrosion at the end of a bridge's service life, and help develop models which could be used to predict how steel will respond given a certain environment. This information would allow designers to add these considerations into future bridge designs.
