Using humor in roadside Dynamic Message Signs trending idea

Recently, towns such as Robbinsville have taken to using humor in dynamic message signs in an effort to warn drivers to slow down, obey traffic laws, drive safely, and otherwise make the road a safer place. Humor might be an effective technique to aid driver memory and reduce crashes and damage to New Jersey roads, as well as increase the effectiveness of passive law enforcement.

Extend Service Life of Concrete Bridge Decks with Internal Curing trending idea

Curing is a critical step in concrete pavement construction. Due to the large surface area to be covered, external curing methods normally do not provide concrete with necessary moisture conditions for long-term hydration. Insufficient curing often causes internal cracks or shrinkage cracks on the surface of the pavement. These early-age cracks not only hurt the strength, but also increase the permeability so that chlorides... more »

Why is this a priority and what are the benefits for the State/County/City?

Internal curing can minimize concrete cracking at very early age. Early age cracking, most are due to shrinkage caused by lacking of curing, will hurt the long-term performance and the durability of concrete. It may cause severe corrosion of rebars, as chlorides and other aggresive ions from deicing chemicals can easily penetrate deep into the concrete layer. Internal curing can also lead to a denser structure of concrete, so that the material is better performed when freeze-thaw cycles happen.

Considering the geographic location of New Jersey and the dense polulation, the pavement maintenance cost is huge each year. Therefore, improve the quality of pavement can not only save efforts and costs of repairing, but also making it a safer place to commute for NJ residents.

Unprecedented Computer Involvement trending idea

In today's world, where computers have an unprecedented involvement in our society's evolution, we should prepare to use that to its fullest extent possible without delegating matters to a private company who may or may not be in business when a problem arises. When not only are the traffic and pedestrian volumes exceeding our capacities, but the tools needed to break new ground in mitigation are also outpacing our ability to understand and utilize, it is imperative that a successful government embrace and utilize these new technologies in a way that does not have to rely on private industry in an emerging and volatile market.

Vertical Cities – Reduce need for transportation and fuel consumption

In order to fit the ever increasing population into the same size areas, we have been growing our cities vertically for decades. However, we are still doing so based on the same old two dimensional zoning structure. We should modify the zoning laws to allow for vertical cities. Construct city high-rise buildings with multiple zones inside. So people can move from residential to commercial, to park, to school zones... more »

Using Topological Data Analysis to determine better directions for financial investment.

When considering serious problems such as the safety of pedestrians and/or motorists, or mitigating excessive traffic in areas where there is no room for expansion and multiple transportation types are used, the amount of data that needs to be processed in order to properly predict what types of projects would be the most effective is voluminous. Currently there are any number of ways that the data can be analyzed.... more »

The pedestrian signal lights should correspond to the universal traffic signal colors. Red to stop and Green to cross. Rollers on guide rails

We know how important it is to have a guide rail on turnings. When big trucks or cars lose their control and hit the guide rail its important to have a strong guide rail even on the bridge if the guide rails and not strong enough it may cause a big accident and vehicle can roll over from the road. so instead of focusing on guide rail, I found if we can put rollers on guide rail colors it will divert the impact force into... more »

As a state worker, I know the importance and cost of the guide rail and when we are talking about safety it's very much important to have guide rails on turns and bridges.

So by using this idea (Rollers in the guide rail's columns) we can decrease the number of ACCIDENTS near guide rails. and save drivers' lives and reduce the amount of injury too. Also, this idea will not cost you more in a modification in guide rails. So it's easy to install and very helpful.

I can share the draft design too for this idea.

this is a priority because , when working on the road, its 80% time if very hard or takes time to even get to the bathroom when it need.

Makes it easier for women to have access when needed.

Benefits:

this would be able to put more workers on the road actually working, then having to drive from the work place on the road, to the yard, then drive back, wasting time that could be spent working on the road.

this would also factor out health issues of holding it for a long time, especially when out don't have any truck to drive you back to the yard or if you are out doing safety, MORE EYES ON THE ROAD THE BETTER

COVID-19 Susceptibility of gas stations

New Jersey is unique in requiring gas station attendants fill the gas in cars. During COVID-19, that may be an advantage (fewer people handling pumps/register or going inside to pay) and also a disadvantage (risk to workers and customers talking through windows). We could account for the risk of transmission by contact with surfaces and the benefit of reduction in contact with surfaces and the risk still present through... more »

New Jersey's model may be instructive for other states, but it is also wise to reevaluate the strategy in light of the pandemic and see where potential vulnerabilities can be best mitigated.

Design-Build for Process Condensation and Savings

It was suggested several years ago, in response to a Commissioner's question, that the only way to eliminate the massive amount of overhead and the massive time and money to be spent on projects is to move the DOT into a design-build company. In times where lockdowns can dramatically affect the flow of revenue, thereby stalling or eliminating important projects, becoming the most efficient company is of the utmost importance.
